Many in the world today have been taught wrongly about who Michael is in the Bible. Why? The Catholic Church has been for many years corrupting doctrine with their own fancy ideas. So you may be asking, if what I say is true then who is Michael? Let us go to the Source of Truth and find out what the Word of God has to say about who Michael really is.

The Name Michael, archangel and the meaning of angel:

Strong's Concordance says,

Daniel 10:13, "But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia."

 04317 Miyka'el {me-kaw-ale'}
from 04310 and (the prefix derivative from) 03588 and 0410;; n pr m

 AV - Michael 13; 13
Michael = "who is like God"

Jude 1:9, "Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee."

743 archaggelos {ar-khang'-el-os}
from 757 and 32; TDNT - 1:87,12; n m

 AV - archangel 2; 2
1) archangel, or chief of the angels

Here we see the connection with Michael and in the book of Daniel 10:13 He is known as “one of the chief princes.” (one = first) And in Jude He is referred to as an archangel that is defined as “chief of the angels.” What we need to understand here about an the term angel can also be found in Strong’s:

Revelation 12:7, "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,"

32 aggelos {ang'-el-os}
from aggello [probably derived from 71, cf 34] (to bring tidings);

TDNT - 1:74,12; n m
AV - angel 179, messenger 7; 186

 1) a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God

What has just been revealed to us?

  • Michael = “who is like God”
  • Arch = “chief”
  • Angel = “messenger from God.”
  • Michael the Archangel is a messenger of God who is like unto God Himself.

The king James Bible says,

Daniel 10:13, "But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia."

Daniel 10:21, "But I will show thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince."

Daniel 12:1, "And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book."

Daniel 12:7, "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven."

Jude 1:9, "Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee."

1 Thessalonians 4:16, "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words."

When looking into all this we can see that Michael is very important. His name says that He is like unto God, our prince who stands for the children of God, who contends with Satan and His angel's. In Jude we find Michael the archangel rebuking the devil. It said, "The Lord rebuke thee." When looking into 1 Thessalonians 4:16 we see that the Lord's voice is that of a sound of the archangel who is like unto God. The trump of God. Archangel is connected with God. Jesus is the commander and chief of all angels. He is the Creator of all angels. Understand this, the name Michael has a very important meaning as well, it means: "(one) who is like God. Also, when you hear of Michael you see war going on. This is another name, title or office for Jesus. When you hear of Michael we better watch out!

Take a look at the different names, titles and offices for our Lord and you can see that Michael is just another office, name and title:

To limit our God to ONE Name will be too hard to do. Our God has unlimited abilities that we can understand or know Him by when we have different names for Him. The different names for God reveals to us a character or role that He is currently in at that moment. Just like I said earlier, when you hear of Michael you know that Jesus is contending with evil. Now let us take a look at another clue in understanding Angel or angel.

Understanding Angel & angel

Genesis 48:16, "The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth."

Jacob's eyes were dim with age, and he had not been aware of the presence of the young men; but now, catching the outline of their forms, he said, "Who are these?" On being told, he added, "Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them." As they came nearer, the patriarch embraced and kissed them, solemnly laying his hands upon their heads in benediction. Then he uttered the prayer, "God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day, the Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads." There was no spirit of self-dependence, no reliance upon human power or cunning now. God had been his preserver and support. There was no complaint of the evil days in the past. Its trials and sorrows were no longer regarded as things that were "against" him. Memory recalled only His mercy and loving-kindness who had been with him throughout his pilgrimage. {Patriarach Prophets pg.234 par.4}

When you look into this verse the word Angel is capitalized. This is the Son of God who is the Great Redeemer of us from evil. If this was not the Son of God then it would not be capitalized. Check out these few verses.

Genesis 16:7, "And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur."

Genesis 16:9, "And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands."

Genesis 16:10, "And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude."

Genesis 16:11, "And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction."

Those verses are talking about an angel who is not God. How do we know? When looking into these next verses we will see Angel capitalized because now it is referring to God.

Exodus 23:20, Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.

Not to go off subject or anything, but many get confused as to why some words are not capitalized when it is referring to God.

Exodus 23:21, Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.

The title him, his and he are not capitalized as they are not in the rest of the Bible because these are pronouns. There is a “rule” of English that is seen here. The king James Bible was translated into English. When you look into the Hebrew language you will see that there are no capitalized words in the alphabet. What do I think about this? If you capitalize pronouns that refer to God to show reverence for His name, that is wonderful! Continue doing so. If you capitalize pronouns that refer to God to make it more clear who is being referred to, please continue to do it! If you are not capitalizing pronouns that refer to God, due to your stand or belief on proper English grammar/syntax/style should be followed, we should all understand that this is not a topic that has to do with our salvation and it should not be made an issue.

Moving on, we also learn from this that the Angel (God) will pardon transgressions for his name. An angel cannot pardon sins, but only God the Angel, the messenger. If anyone thinks that an angel can forgive sins they are wrong, and this would be blasphemy. The Word of God is straight to the point about this subject of who can forgive sins. Matthew 5:21-25, "And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God."

In short, Michael is not a created being as many assume. He is the Son of God. It is just another name for God our Lord. He is the Creator or Archangel of all angels. The Son of God reveals Himself to the angels in the form of an Angel just as God came as a man to reveal Himself to us. He was given the Name Emmanuel. Matthew 1:23, "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." Before we close here I would also just like everyone to know that the Name of Michael, or understanding of Michael is not a savational issue. This is not a subject that should cause division among the brethren, but also understand that if you are walking with God the Holy Spirit He will lead you into all truths and you will see it as just that, TRUTH.
