Genesis 49:3, “Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power.” 

Excellency = because he was the firstborn

But after he sinned, his excellency was no more.
Genesis 49:4, “Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou [it]: he went up to my couch.”

THE PRIESTHOOD

According to God’s original plan, the office of the priesthood belongs to the father of the family. In place of the father, the literal firstborn (eldest) son took over the position.

 

After the literal firstborn proved themselves unfaithful, they were replaced and the spiritual firstborn took over the position.
Levi – was not a firstborn but possessed the character worthy of the inheritance of the priesthood
Levi inherited the priesthood because the tribe of Levi stood true to God in time of a crisis (Deuteronomy 33:9)

THE PRIESTHOOD

Numbers 3:12, “And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine.” Aaron was the high priest and the common priests were his son Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. Exodus 28:1

THE PRIESTHOOD

To consecrate a priest:
1.  First, Aaron was clothed in garments specially made just for him under the direction of God. The complete description of the garment is found in Exodus 28
2.  They will kill a ram and take his blood. Exodus 29:20
3.  They will touch the blood upon the tip of the right ear of Aaron and upon the tip of the right ear of his sons. Exodus 29:20
4.  They will touch the blood upon the thumb of their right hand. Exodus 29:20
5. They will touch the blood upon the great toe of their right foot and sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about. Exodus 29:20
6. The blood is sprinkled to Aaron and his sons. Exodus 29:21
7. They will take unleavened bread and the right shoulder of the animal sacrifice as a wave offering unto the Lord.   Exodus 29:22, 24

HIGH PRIEST

  1. Performed a work not only in the court and first apartment but also into the most holy place once a year. Hebrews 9:7, Lev 16:33,    

Leviticus 16:29, “And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you.”

  1. Hebrews 13:11,  “For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp.”
  2. Only the high priest can trim and light the lamps in the 7 candlestick twice every day. Leveticus 24:3
  3. Only the high priest can burn incense in the golden altar before the Lord. Exodus 30:7-8

The high priest entered into the Most Holy Place once a year.  Hebrews 9:7

Christ entered into the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary on 1844 to start the investigative judgment. 1844 – the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary. Daniel 8:14.

This typified that Christ our High Priest that we, the true Israel thinks about us individually and confesses our names as they come up in review before God.

The robe of the high priest:
Exodus 28:2, “ And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.”

The orders of priesthood:

  1. Melchizedek - king of salem as well as priest of the Most High God. Genesis 14:18
  • Christ was made a priest after the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 6:20.
  1. Levitical – Aaron was the first Levitical high priest
  • Has 24 courses - 1 Chronicles 24:7-18
  • Each course had its own chief

1 Chronicles   24:6, 31 “…and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites. These likewise cast lots over against their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites, even the principal fathers over against their younger brethren.”.

 Luke   1:8, “And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
Zacharias was under the course of Abia.”

Luke   1:5, “ There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

Psalms 24:1, “The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”

Numbers 18:21, 24, “And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation…But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the LORD, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.”

THE PRIESTHOOD

1 Samuel 2:31     Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.

1 Samuel 2:35     And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever. 

The Duties of God’s priests/ministers:
Malachi 2:7, “For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.”

Leviticus  10:11, “And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.” 

Malachi   2:8, “But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.”

Malachi 2:9, “Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.”

Psalms 111:9, “He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.”

Christ our Mediator:
1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
